Remedy also added engineers to Ash’s platform team, which is responsible for handling the customer journey and test kit lifecycle from start to end.

First, they facilitate new client onboarding processes. This involves configuring clients’ webhook to securely receive information from the system, place orders, and get results and notifications. Onboarding also includes setting up test kit status notifications, test type selections, lab configurations etc.

Second, they handle initial order placement and order fulfillment of the physical test kits. They created integrations with Ash’s supply partners to coordinate the physical materials needed to fulfill the test-kit orders.

They also built a notification system to track the entire lifecycle of test kit orders. Not only do tracking notifications help patients and clients, the notification system also flags issues that occur during the order lifecycle for Ash to resolve.

Remedy’s real time monitoring of specific services reduces the burden on the on-call engineers and increases Ash’s overall customer success.

With Remedy, Ash has increased their revenue >40x, lowered their burn rate, secured seed, seed extension, and series A funding, and increased their test kit sending capacity by 360%.

Company Overview

Ash Wellness is a health testing company enabling the integration of at-home health testing into existing care options. They partner with healthcare providers and digital health companies to make healthcare more accessible to patients.

Ash was first conceptualized at the Cornell Tech MBA program. When Ash launched in 2019, their focus was supporting the LGBTQ+ community through accessible sexual health testing. As Ash has grown, they’ve expanded to over 150 types of biomarker tests and continue to prioritize serving people at the margins.

Their services include a secure API platform, white-label test kits, HIPAA compliant lab integrations, online patient and client portals, and a healthcare provider network. Common tests they run on their platform include diabetes/weight management, sexual health, hormone/fertility, cancer screens, kidney health, and heart health.

Remedy invested in Ash as part of their bridge round in 2022.

The Problem

Remedy’s Head of Product and Strategy Iggy Moliver first met Ash’s founder David Stein at Cornell Tech in 2020. Iggy became an adviser to Ash and angel-invested in their pre-seed.

Built on this relationship, Ash formally partnered with Remedy in spring 2021 when Ash decided to pivot from a D2C model to a B2B strategy. The pivot required them to integrate their services with their national lab network. They asked Remedy to support in building a secure and scalable API that acted as a connector between their platform and the labs.

As Ash has grown over the last 3+ years, Remedy has integrated into more teams, including the core Platform, to take on new responsibilities and support seamless scaling.

The Solutions

In order to build out the API at the beginning of the partnership, Remedy created an autonomous (or cross-functional) product squad that parallelized Ash’s internal engineering workstreams. In less than three months, Remedy’s team released a Lab API system that securely passed patient data between labs and Ash’s internal platform.

As Ash grew their clientele, they also expanded their lab network to align with new client needs, such as legal compliance in new states.

To align with this expansion, the Remedy team developed new services, including offering an API Physician of Record (POR) to improve patient experience. Instead of sending life-changing test results directly to a patient, a Physician of Record adds sensitivity into the process by having a doctor first receive and communicate critical test results. This way, patients don’t read complex medical news alone without advice or context.

Another functionality that Remedy built to align the lab API with new client needs is a “Lab Routing” feature. This feature is a sequential decision funnel that assigns client orders to the most suitable available lab based on requirements such as price, speed, state location, test types, etc.

All of Remedy’s original Lab API team members have worked and grown with Ash over the 3+ year partnership, and they continue to work with Ash on responsibilities now extending far past API, including core architecture and technology leadership.

For example, this Remedy team now leads the infrastructure of auth services — the core of Ash’s technical security — including permission management, session key validation, and credential verification. The team also now focuses on building tools for users that automate and optimize processes, which reduces dependency on engineers for issue resolution.

In addition to this Lab API team, Remedy has stood up additional team members on two other Ash teams to focus on other key areas of Ash’s services: portals and platform.

Portals

To improve the user-experience of Ash’s growing services, Remedy designed portals for patients and clients to view their orders and results.

  • The patient portal: Because Ash is B2B, they generally don’t interact directly with patients. Aligning with Ash’s ultimate mission of empowering patients and making healthcare accessible, they wanted patients to access critical healthcare data without relying on their institutions. Remedy helped Ash build a portal where patients can directly register test kits and access test status and results.

  • The client portal: Following the patient portal, Remedy created a client portal to provide the institutions with big-picture data about their patient populations. The client portal allows Ash’s partners to view statistics, such as total number of test orders, test statuses, and kit tracking information in one secure dashboard. They can also see general trends in the test results of their patients. This portal was released in the spring of 2024.

“We view Remedy's team as our own. They often join meetings with key external partners and clients, which speaks to their competency and ability to act as a true Ash extension. Remedy's product teams seamlessly gather requirements and distill them not just into actionable user stories, but proper roadmaps. In my experience, one of the toughest things for a product manager is balancing the business desire for new features and the engineering desire to constantly build the 'best' thing from a technical perspective. This is something Remedy’s product team has mastered.”

Ongoing Work

After 3+ years of successful partnership, Remedy now assists in Ash’s technical interviewing process, and Remedy members have become a core part of Ash’s internal team.

Remedy is currently supporting Ash with the strategic decision to diversify enterprise level partnerships. With the prioritization of this payor profile, Remedy is taking on new product initiatives:

  1. Because enterprise payors prioritize security and compliance, Remedy is building infrastructure with specific increased security measures, in addition to scaling technical traffic capacity and security infrastructure in the portals.

  2. Because enterprise clients often house sub-clients beneath them, Remedy is working to create layers within Ash’s client portal to ensure that the data of each sub-client is customizable and kept separate, private, and secure from one another.

“I'm super privileged to be a full part of Ash’s team. Remedy sits with their client success team during meetings, works with their leadership, and talks directly to lab partners. There’s an amazing level of trust. I’m genuinely passionate about Ash's mission. Knowing that I contribute to something meaningful motivates me and my team. I deeply appreciate Ash’s commitment to patients and clients.”

The Impact

During our 3+ year partnership, Remedy has helped Ash:

  • Hit operational and revenue KPIs
  • Keep their burn rate low
  • Fundraise three rounds
  • Meet investors, clients, and partners through introductions
  • Run co-marketing initiatives

Specifically, Ash’s capacity for shipping health testing kits has increased tremendously within the last two years. In June of 2024, Ash was able to ship 30,000 test kits in just one month, marking a 100% increase since June of 2023, and a 233% increase since June of 2022.

Since partnering with Remedy, Ash has also increased their revenue >40x. From 2022-2023, they doubled their revenue, and they are currently on target to end 2024 with at least a 120% revenue increase from 2023.

Despite tremendous growth, Ash continues to lower its burn rate. Remedy helps Ash keep their overhead technical costs low, and because of this, they have remained capital efficient.

This low burn rate has helped Ash during fundraises. They raised a seed round in May of 2021 and a $10 million Series A in April of 2024; within this time, Ash’s valuation increased 3x. They also raised a seed extension round in 2022, which Remedy invested in, and during which Remedy’s Head of Product and Strategy Iggy Moliver organized two syndicates.

Remedy facilitated other valuable introductions for Ash, including a connection to Empire City Labs in 2022, who is now a major Ash partner and Series A participant.

Ash and Remedy have also collaborated on industry events, including co-hosting a HealthTech Happy Hour in Oct. 2023, and featuring Ash’s CPO Kyle Waters on a panel at a Remedy healthtech event with Perkins Coie and SemperVirens VC in Sept. 2024.
